COLUMBUS, Ind.–Heritage Fund: The Community Foundation of Bartholomew County has identified the 2018 winners of its Brown Music Competition. Columbus North High School seniors Machi Takada and Joseph Robinson placed first in the competition and will each receive scholarships in the amount of $3500. Takada is a trombonist who performed “Morceau Symphonique” by Alexandre Guilmant to win the Betty F. Brown Awards for Instrumental Excellence. Robinson, a baritone, received first place in the Anna Newell Brown Awards for Vocal Excellence, singing “Psalm XXIII” by Creston and “Si, Tra I Ceppi” by Handel.
Senior Evan Porter received the second-place instrumental award of $2,000 playing alto saxophone. In the senior vocal competition, Ciaran Hill, a tenor, claimed second-place honors and a scholarship of $1,500.
Ten seniors competed in the instrumental portion of the contest, and nine seniors participated in the vocal competition. In the sophomore and junior competitions, 14 instrumentalists and 15 vocalists competed for scholarships for music lessons or music camps.
