COLUMBUS, Ind.–The Columbus Municipal airport might resemble its days as Atterbury Air Field during World War II this weekend. The American Heroes edition of Aviation Day takes to the skies on Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., to honor veterans of all wars, particularly Columbus native John Walter, a former B-17 pilot who recently passed away. Walter was a founding member of the Atterbury-Bakalar Museum at the airport.
To commemorate his legacy, WWII-era and modern military aircraft will be on display. Several of the planes will also take part in the noon aerial demonstration, including the B-17G bomber “Yankee Lady,” a T-6 Texan trainer aircraft, a UH-1 helicopter, and a Kentucky National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk. Parachute jumpers will also drop in.
In addition to the aircraft in the air, several will be on the ground so families can see them up close and engage with pilots. Other activities for Aviation Day include a car show at the Atterbury-Bakalar Museum, bounce houses for kids, and educational booths with interactive displays. Blackerby’s Hangar 5 is serving a pancake breakfast and hog roast lunch during the event.
