CFD responds to apartment balcony fire

COLUMBUS, Ind.–Crews from the Columbus Fire Department responded to a fire on an apartment balcony Wednesday afternoon. Authorities at CFD report that the tenant at River Stone Apartments said he had been smoking a cigarette outside on the balcony and left it on a cardboard box before going inside for a moment. When firefighters arrived, they had to clear off melted vinyl and shut off the sprinkler system of the third floor unit above, which had been set off by heat from the blaze. No injuries were reported.
