COLUMBUS, Ind.— A local man is in custody for DUI after he struck several mailboxes before leaving the scene of the accident. Lt. Matt Harris of the Columbus Police Department said officers responded to the 4500 block of Jonathan Moore Pike, where they spoke with a witness who saw the crash occur.
The truck, driven by Douglas H. Mitchell, 54, of Columbus, had extensive front end damage and was later towed. When officers spoke with Douglas, they noted that his speech was slurred and smelled the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath.
After allegedly failing several field sobriety exercises, Mitchell was transported to the Columbus Police Department where law enforcement said he provided a breath test sample of .201 percent. He was later transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he faces preliminary charges of leaving the scene of an accident and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
