COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers issued a public safety alert after a spike in heroin overdoses this week.
Three suspected overdoses have been reported, including the death of a 21-year-old Bartholomew County woman.
“The cause of death is presumed to be a drug overdose possibly involving ‘bad heroin,’” Myers said. “Or, it could be an ultra-potent heroin that is so pure it can kill unsuspecting users instantly,” he added.
First responders have used the life-saving medication Narcan eight times since April saving seven lives.
“If so-called ‘bad heroin’ is coming into Bartholomew County, we must know where it is coming from. The sheriff’s office wants to know who is bringing heroin into Bartholomew County,” Myers said.
The sheriff said heroin is not considered a crisis in the county but remains the department’s top priority.
Seven people have been booked into the Bartholomew County Jail on heroin-related charges so far this year compared to 21 all of last year.
