COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Columbus Human Rights Commission has selected Dr. Marwan Wafa and Ala’a Wafa as the recipients of its 2016 William R. Laws Human Rights Award.
Dr. Marwan Wafa and Ala’a will be honored at the Commission’s Annual Dinner Meeting, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. on May 19 at The Commons.
They were selected for their joint contribution in making Columbus a more inclusive community through dialogue and education.
“Both Marwan and Ala’a have actively raised cultural awareness among different groups in the community and worked to provide environments that foster education and understanding,” said Director Aida Ramirez.
Marwan and Ala’a have facilitated several panel presentations and discussions regarding religious diversity and cultural acceptance, including most recently the dialogue series “Just Faith: An Open Christian and Muslim Dialogue of Peace and Common Values.”
At the Annual Dinner Meeting, the Commission will also honor the student winners of the art and essay contests.
The keynote address will be given by Salam Al-Marayati, the president and co-founder of the Muslim Public Affairs Council.
