COLUMBUS, Ind.–High winds over the weekend knocked out power to over 1000 homes across Bartholomew County and south-central Indiana.
Bartholomew County Rural Energy Management Corporation (BCREMC) said that nearly 600 customers lost service for several hours on Saturday night. A majority of those outages were experienced in Jackson Township. As of Sunday, over 99 percent of all BCREMC customers had had their power restored.
Duke Energy reported outages to over 700 residences in Bartholomew, Johnson, Jackson, Jennings, and Decatur counties on Saturday evening. As of Monday morning, most of the power is back on in these areas. Government and Community Relations Manager Chip Orben says that extra crews were called out Saturday afternoon to assess damage and then go about exacting repairs throughout Saturday night and part of Sunday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis says wind gusts Saturday night at the Columbus Municipal Airport topped out at 52 mph. NWS also reports that winds in Shelbyville reached 58 mph, Edinburgh recorded 42 mph winds, and Greenwood was hit with 40 mph gusts.
