COLUMBUS, Ind.–An Elizabethtown man was arrested Thursday after a months-long investigation by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities say that detectives began their inquiry into the activities of Robert Swengel, 35, after checking into a case of online harassment and threatening.
Investigators allege the man was saying he worked for an independent wrestling promotion in Columbus when, in truth, he worked for a Madison promotion. Authorities notified the Madison organization that Swengel was a convicted sex offender whose employment with their company was prohibited by his status. Swengel was promptly terminated.
On Thursday, Swengel was arrested on an out-of-county warrant and taken to Bartholomew County Jail. He was charged with unlawful employment near children, unlawful entry of school property by a serious sex offender, and being a habitual offender. Because Swengel is accused of crimes committed within the jurisdiction of Jefferson County, he has since been transferred to the Jefferson County Jail.
