GREENWOOD, Ind.–A Greenwood man is in custody after violating a protective order Saturday morning. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says they were contacted by the friend of a woman whose boyfriend, Michael Schmaltz, 45, had come to her Greenwood home, despite her having the order against him.
Deputies went to the residence on Paddock Road and attempted to make contact with individuals inside the house to no avail. They confirmed through the friend that both her girlfriend and Schmaltz were, indeed, inside the home. After consulting with deputy prosecutors, officers determined they did not have probable cause to enter the residence and stood down while keeping an eye out for anyone leaving.
A short while later, the victim came out through the garage and was quickly taken into care by authorities. Negotiators continued to try to coax Schmaltz to surrender. Moments later, the suspect was seen running from the back of the house. After a brief foot chase, Schmaltz was apprehended and taken to Johnson County Jail, charged with violating a protective order and resisting law enforcement.
