Man arrested after dirt bike chase

NORTH VERNON, Ind.–A Jennings County man was taken into custody Monday afternoon after leading police on a high-speed chase through a North Vernon residential neighborhood. The North Vernon Police Department says they received reports of someone on a dirt bike speeding up and down Harms Street. Officers located the suspect and attempted pull him over. However, instead of stopping, police say the man sped off.

NVPD says a pursuit ensued with speeds reaching 60 mph before the subject abandoned the dirt bike and disappeared into a nearby apartment. Law enforcement says they eventually coaxed him out of hiding. As he was being arrested, he allegedly made threats of physical violence against officers.

The suspect was identified as Brett Matern, 31, of Scipio. Matern was charged with resisting law enforcement by fleeing in a vehicle, resisting law enforcement by fleeing or fighting, intimidation of a police officer, disorderly conduct, and three previous warrants.
