Catalytic converter theft attempt foiled

Trey Smith

COLUMBUS, Ind.–A Bartholomew County man was arrested Wednesday night after he apparently tried to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle in a parking lot in the 3600 block of North National Road. Lt. Matt Harris of the Columbus Police Department says the suspect was found by the car’s owner lying on the ground next to the vehicle. When confronted by the owner, the would-be thief fled. Officers inspected the car and noted the catalytic converter was loose and touching the ground. After a short search, police found the suspect near Washington Street and National Road and identified him as Trey Smith, 22, of Columbus. Smith was charged with attempted theft and three other outstanding Bartholomew County warrants.
