COLUMBUS, Ind.–A flat tire and a broken rear window got the police involved in the pursuit of a man who was allegedly driving while intoxicated. Lt. Matt Harris, public information officer with the Columbus Police Department, says that officers attempted to pull over the disabled vehicle driven by James Charles, 56, of Columbus, on Lafayette Avenue. Police say that instead of stopping, he sped into a nearby parking lot, exited his car, and fled on foot. Law enforcement apprehended him a short time later.
As they spoke with Charles, police say they noticed the strong odor of alcohol on his breath. The suspect was taken to Columbus Regional Health for a blood draw before being transported to Bartholomew County Jail. Charles faces charges of operating a vehicle under the influence and resisting law enforcement.
