COLUMBUS, Ind.–Mayor Jim Lienhoop has proclaimed today as Alzheimer’s Awareness Day in Columbus. The Alzheimer’s Association refers to today, June 21, as “The Longest Day,” a day for the public to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, which will affect 14 million Americans by 2050. Participants are encouraged to choose an activity that they enjoy from this website, and raise funds for Alzheimer’s research while doing it.
The organization also asks you to review the six Tips for Approaching Alzheimer’s, in case you have to talk to someone who may be showing symptoms. They include:
o Have the conversation as early as possible
o Think about who is best suited to initiate the conversation
o Practice conversation starters
o Offer your support, companionship
o Anticipate gaps in self-awareness
o Recognize the conversation may not go as planned
