Sheriff warns residents of jury duty scam

COLUMBUS, Ind.–The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office recently received word that a scammer is using the name of an actual deputy of the department in an attempt to con residents. The caller identifies himself as Deputy Chris Lane, informs the would-be victim that they have missed jury duty, and a summons would be issued unless they pay a fine.

The sheriff’s department emphasizes that deputies never call asking for a fee for missed jury duty service. If you receive one, you are advised to not send money nor give out personal information over the phone.

Representatives with the sheriff’s office believe scammers are getting the names of deputies online, and are concerned that many people may be convinced by the professional-sounding voice to provide information to the caller. If you receive this type of fraudulent call, hang up and phone the Sheriff’s Office, at 812-379-1650, to verify its authenticity. The information for the detective working the case is below.

Detective Terry Holderness
Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office
