GREENWOOD, Ind.—Four teenagers are lucky to be alive after they ran from law enforcement early Sunday morning. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office explains that three males and one female, between the ages of 15 and 17, were in a car in which officers attempted to stop on Smith Valley Road for traveling with its high-beam headlights turned on and failing to turn them off. The deputy activated his emergency lights to pull them over, but the teens allegedly accelerated to a speed of 90 mph, before turning south onto Honey Creek Road.
The sheriff’s department says the chase ended when the teens veered off through a church parking lot, cut through backyards of adjacent homes, and crashed into a pond. The vehicle began to sink, but the four occupants were able to escape. Two swam to shore, but the others required rescuing by emergency crews.
The four teens were sent to Community Hospital South for observation. The driver faces charges of fleeing in a motor vehicle.
