Two men arrested after North Vernon car chase

NORTH VERNON, Ind.–Two men were arrested following a brief car chase Wednesday morning in Jennings County. The North Vernon Police Department says that a vehicle driven by Clarence Howard III, 27, of Butlerville, was spotted running a red light at Walnut Street and Norris Avenue. Elbert Howard, Jr., of North Vernon was a passenger in the car.

Officers say they turned on their flashing lights and attempted to pull over the vehicle, but instead of stopping, the car accelerated. Police pursued at speeds eventually reaching nearly 80 mph. A front tire blew on the suspect’s car, causing it to run off the road near Muscatatuck County Park. NVPD says both men exited and fled on foot. They were found a short time later and taken into custody.

Clarence Howard III was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of a syringe, resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, criminal recklessness with a vehicle, criminal mischief, and outstanding warrants of possession of methamphetamine, possession of syringe level, and two counts of resisting law enforcement.

Elbert Howard, Jr. was charged with resisting law enforcement, and for outstanding warrants of failure to appear for an original charge of possession of methamphetamine, a level 6 felony.
