FRANKLIN, Ind. — Johnson County Commissioners are discussing changes in the area of a historic grave that is in the middle of the road near Franklin.
The grave of Nancy Kerlin Barnett (1793-1831) sits on a small mound of earth that splits the road on County Road 400S.
The commissioners are weighing different options due to the grave deteriorating after years of traffic.
“We would rather see the grave stay where it is but lower the grave so its not a hazard to people driving,” said commissioner Brian Baird. “It would also give us more space where we can widen the road and protect the grave with curbs and a concrete wall.”
When commissioners agree on a plan, it will have to be approved by the Department of Natural Resources.
University of Indianapolis archaeology students have offered to exhume the grave and rebury it in the same location.
