COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus Firefighters were dispatched to the Willowood/Applegate complex on Thursday evening for a report of an apartment fire.
Police officers on the scene evacuated 11 tenants from the adjacent apartments located in the single story apartment building. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they discovered light smoke coming from one of the apartments and from a ventilation fan on the roof top. Inside the apartment, crews found flames on the stove and extinguished the fire.
Investigators reported that the occupant of the apartment had briefly left the apartment and returned home to discover smoke. The tenant told investigators that she had been cooking and thought she had turned the stove off before leaving.
Damages to the apartment are estimated at $15,000 for structure and contents. The tenant told firefighters she has renters insurance. The tenant was treated for smoke inhalation by Columbus Regional Health EMS at the scene and refused transport to hospital.
