SHELBYVILLE, Ind. — Executives from Shelbyville-based Ryobi have informed Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb they plan an expansion that will add 150 new jobs by 2018.
The company will invest $97.5 million to build and equip a 350,000 square-foot facility that will be used to cast engine blocks. The expansion will allow Ryobi to increase production to 500,000 units annually. Construction will begin in the fall of 2016.
Ryobi employs 860 people in Shelbyville and plans to begin hiring more production and management associates over the next 18 months. Globally, Ryobi employs about 8,000 people.
Ryobi established their only facility in the United States in Shelbyville in 1985. The Japanese company currently has 12 manufacturing facilities in six countries. Ryobi performs aluminum die casting for more than 300 different types of automobiles. The Shelbyville facility makes transmission cases, housings, engine parts and structural parts for Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Honda and Toyota.
This the third major economic expansion announcement made regarding the city of Shelbyville this year.
The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Ryobi $775,000 in conditional tax credits and $75,000 in training grants. The city of Shelbyville will consider additional incentives in the future.
