COLUMBUS, Ind. — Jeremy Coomes, former Columbus Police Department narcotics division supervisor, has accepted a plea deal in his criminal case. He has agreed to plead guilty to felony possession of methamphetamine, felony official misconduct and misdemeanor theft. In exchange, the prosecution will not make any recommendation during the sentencing phase of the proceedings.
Coomes was facing a total of 10 charges relating to taking and possessing narcotics from the Columbus Police Department evidence room. He resigned from the department in October 2015.
Court documents show Coomes checked out items from the evidence room at least 10 times and when the items were returned, some of the substances were missing or replaced with a counterfeit substance.
Coomes will be sentenced on December 29, 2016. He could receive a sentence of up to 18 years and a fine of as much as $10,000.
