ANDERSON, Ind. — The Indiana State Police are investigating a major attack on the government computer systems in Madison County. Investigators say hackers used ransomware to render the systems inoperable and have demanded a large ransom payment. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Officials have assured the public this was not targeted at the upcoming general election, and say ballots are handled on a separate server. Additionally, the dispatch center is also on a stand-alone server.
Indiana State Police say they do not negotiate with hackers because it only encourages more attacks.
