GREENWOOD, Ind. — Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a fraud case in the Greenwood area. The female victim told police she had recently suffered a concussion and was having trouble reasoning.
The victim received a call from someone posing as her niece. The woman told the victim she was on her way to the doctor’s office when she and a friend were pulled over by police for a suspended license and possessing drugs. The woman had her accomplice posing as police officer tell the victim she had to buy four $500 dollar iTunes gift cards in order to bail her niece out of jail. The victim complied and later called the police. During the investigation, police verified all four iTunes cards were cashed.
Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox states a government agency will never demand payment over the phone and will never specify iTunes gift cards.
