COLUMBUS, Ind. — Unattended cooking has been ruled as the cause of a fire in the 800 block of California Street on Thursday at 8:35 p.m. Firefighters attacked the fire from the rear of the home and extinguished the blaze with a minimal amount of water. Smoke alarms alerted the 86-year-old, female resident and she was able to escape unharmed.
Columbus Fire Department spokesman Mike Wilson says cooking has been the leading cause of residential fires in 2016. Before your kitchen gets busy over the holidays, review cooking procedures, safety guidelines, check smoke detectors and even consider purchasing a small fire extinguisher.
