COLUMBUS, Ind. —Two people are in jail after attempting to elude police in a stolen vehicle.
Sunday around 5 a.m., Columbus police observed two people in a vehicle that had just been reported stolen near the intersection of Indiana Avenue and Salzburg Boulevard. When police signaled a traffic stop the driver fled at a high rate of speed. The chase continued into the county where police unsuccessfully used tire deflation devices to stop the suspects. The driver, later identified as Jose Vera, 30, drove through several farm fields to elude law enforcement but eventually drove down an embankment and struck several trees. Both suspects fled the accident scene on foot. A Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputy captured the passenger, Alexis Ketchum, 18. A canine officer apprehended Vera.
Jose Vera has been charged with auto theft, resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, resisting law enforcement on foot, and driving while suspended. Alexis Ketchum was arrested for auto theft and resisting law enforcement on foot.
