INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana House Committee on Public policy has agreed to further study a proposal made by state representative Jim Lucas to provide a constitutional carry law. His proposal would no longer require a person to obtain a license to carry a handgun, if they are already legally allowed to own a gun. The law would still exclude felons, persons under 18, and those already not legally allowed to carry.
“There’s a lot of confusion and misunderstanding about constitutional carry and what this would mean for Indiana,” Lucas said. “I want to help educate the public and policymakers and clear up misconceptions, like how my proposal would not change who can and cannot own a gun in Indiana. I am looking forward to discussing constitutional carry in a summer study committee.”
The committee will take the proposal as an amendment, and if passed, it would be assigned to a summer study committee. Twelve other states already have constitutional carry laws.
