COLUMBUS, Ind. — Indiana State Police are warning residents about a rash of burglaries that have occurred while homeowners were away attending funerals. The trend has notably increased in the last year.
Detectives say thieves gain information from the media and social media in order to determine locations and times the home will be vacant.
The best way of protection against something like this is:
- Having someone be at your home during the time of the wake, memorial, or funeral.
- Have a home security system with cameras, automated lighting, and alarms which also has a direct link to a monitoring service.
- Make sure your entry door and locks are strong and not easy to break into.
- Use your locks and secure your home every time you leave, even if you will only be gone a short time.
- Notify your local police and have them do extra patrols by your home during this time.
