BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Bloomington campus of Indiana University has reported five cases of the mumps since December. In order to stop the spread of the disease, officials are offering immunizations.
The university is working closely with the Monroe County Health Department and the Indiana Department of Health to identify those who have contacted mumps, and notify people who may have come in contact with the infected persons.
Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears. Treatment focuses on easing symptoms and includes bed rest, a soft diet, and pain relievers.
A report from the Centers for Disease Control says there are mumps cases in 46 states, a 10-year high.
Students and staff with symptoms are asked to stay home and call the Indiana University Health Center at 812-855-5002 during the day, or call 812-303-2631 at night.
