COLUMBUS, Ind. — Consultants have told Bartholomew County Commissioners it may cost as much as $12 million to renovate or replace deteriorating facilities over the next decade. The estimate includes repairs to the courthouse and Veterans Memorial, plus a new building for the county highway department.
Representatives from DLZ, an engineering, architectural and construction services firm, told commissioners the courthouse will require $800,000 in masonry restoration over the next two years. Replacement of the HVAC system in the next two years is also advised. Other recommended improvements include new windows, light fixtures and other electrical items.
The study determined the county garage is obsolete. Engineers said the floor is cracked, electrical system is at capacity, there is no available storage, and the facility needs a new roof.
The $12 million estimate will be used to make the case for the cumulative capital improvement fund. State recommendations are to raise property taxes by .0166 per $100 of assessed value. This could increase taxes for someone with a $100,000 home by about $5.40. The tax debate will continue over the next several months.
