FRANKLIN, Ind. — Johnson County Sheriff’s detectives are looking into fraud case that cost a local woman $1,700.
Police say a caller from Oregon identified himself as being from the U.S. Treasury and told the victim she owed about $5,000, but If she paid now they would take $3,000 to settle the account. The victim was instructed to pay the debt with iTunes gift cards. The victim went to two different stores to get iTunes gift cards totally $1700. After this initial payment, the victim told the caller she was not sending any more money and hung up the phone. The police were called when the person from Oregon began to repeatedly call the victim.
Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox says never give personal information over the phone and always consult with a trusted friend or family member in these situations. Officials from the IRS say they will never call and demand payment over the phone, especially in iTunes gift cards.
