COLUMBUS, Ind. — A report of an intoxicated driver led to the arrest of a Columbus resident early Wednesday morning.
Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Deputies encountered Mark Winters, 60, at the Ricker’s store on County Road 450S around 2:50 a.m. When officers approached Winters they could smell the strong odor of alcohol. In the suspect’s vehicle the deputies found an open container of alcohol, numerous soft drink cans poked with holes containing a green leafy substance, and a plastic wrapper with a green leafy substance.
Winters was taken to Columbus Regional Health prior to being transported to the jail. While at the hospital Winters became abusive and police reports say he spat on the deputy. Winters has been charged with public intoxication, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, battery by bodily waste, and battery on a law enforcement officer.
