COLUMBUS, Ind. — The United States Marshalls Service is warning residents about a telephone scam. Officials say callers claim to be with the organization and are collecting fines in lieu of arrest for failing to report for jury duty. The U.S. Marshalls Service does not make calls to arrange payment for fines for any infraction.
In an effort to be more convincing, scammers may provide badge numbers, names of actual federal judges, and courthouse addresses. Victims have been told they can avoid arrest by paying a fine using a reloadable credit card.
Officials say never give personal or financial information to unknown callers, even if they sound legitimate.
