HOPE, Ind. — Burglars attempted to hit the Dollar General Store in Hope two times this week.
Early Sunday morning, surveillance cameras caught two masked men prying a rear door open and tying a rope to a safe that was bolted to the floor. Once tied, one suspect ran outside, got into a vehicle and gunned the engine, but the rope snapped. The video footage shows the men kicking, pulling and hitting the safe with a sledgehammer for two minutes before leaving the scene.
Monday night, Hope Town Marshal Matt Tallent decided to post a reserve deputy near the store. Police reports say that at some point that evening three suspects arrived, driving a silver Silverado with a chain, dolly and heavier rope. As the suspects began to work at the scene, they saw police and took off in the truck. The officer pursued the three men and the chase lasted for a few miles before the suspects stopped, exited the vehicle, and fled on foot.
Even though all three suspects got away, police recovered a cell phone, tools and two pairs of sweat pants. They believe they have enough evidence to lead them to the intruders.
