COLUMBUS, Ind. — About 2,500 Columbus City Utilities customers recently received past-due and disconnect notices after a clerical error occurred.
Keith Reeves, director of Columbus City Utilities, says a mistake in a date field caused the flood of notices to be sent when only 200 should have been mailed. The incorrect notices told customers they had to pay the bill or face disconnection, but there was no balance on the bill.
Columbus City Utilities sends out about 18,000 bills each month and is working to prevent any errors in the future.
