COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) held a public hearing Wednesday at Columbus City Hall regarding the Louisville & Indiana Railroad/State Roads 46 and 11 overpass initiative.
Engineering firm CMT gave a project presentation outlining the environmental studies, project history, purpose, need, alternatives considered during the development, key design criteria, project cost estimates, and traffic routing during construction.
INDOT and the city of Columbus will split 95% of the project price on a 50/50 basis, with the remaining 5% coming from INDOT. Total estimated cost is $30 million.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, there was general approval of the project but some concerns were also expressed. Questions asked included, how water would be directed as a result of various aspects of the undertaking, how much soil displacement might be required if more lanes need to be added to State Road 46 in the future, and whether passenger rail might be considered as part of the overall project.
