BARGERSVILLE, Ind. – UPDATE: According to law enforcement, at 10:44 p.m. Monday, the Bargersville Fire Department, Indianapolis Fire Department, and Sugar Creek Fire Department recovered the body of Douglas Abney, 56, of Bargersville. Rescue crews reportedly worked over 10 hours to recover Abney’s body.
Original: The Bargersville Fire Department received a call around 12:10 p.m. on Monday about a person trapped in a construction trench after it collapsed at 4991 West County Road 225N.
Crews reported one fatality from the accident and that another individual was able to escape. At first, rescuers were unable to get a visual on the trapped individual and deemed entering the trench too dangerous for an attempt to search.
Emergency personnel continuously assessed the situation and eventually transitioned from rescue to recovery mode. Crews are now said to be in the process of excavating the site to recover the victim.
