FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges of murder, pointing a firearm, and carrying a handgun without a license against Emilio Garcia, 20, of Indianapolis. Garcia was one of two suspects arrested after a fatal shooting in Franklin on January 25.
Police say that they responded to a report of shots being fired behind the Boys and Girls Club of Franklin last Saturday. When they arrived, they found a deceased male, later identified as Donovan Burdine, laying on his side in the front yard. During an investigation, officers determined that an altercation had taken place during an alleged drug transaction. During the fight, Garcia supposedly shot Burdine. Police say that after Burdine was incapacitated, the suspect retrieved Burdine’s gun and shot the victim multiple times in the back of the head.
“As oftentimes is the case, the source of violent crime is drug dealing. That is why it is important to focus on taking drug dealers off the streets. Thankfully, with the hard work of the Franklin Police Department and the Johnson Co. Sheriff’s Office, we were able to quickly find the suspect and the murder weapon,” said Prosecutor Joe Villanueva.
