SEYMOUR, Ind. – After a two-month investigation by the Indiana State Police (ISP)-Versailles, a Jackson County man was arrested on Thursday on a warrant for Neglect of a Dependent Causing Death.
The situation began on March 27, when a 9-1-1 caller reported that a six-week old male infant was not responsive at 518 Colvin Court. Emergency personnel responded and attempted to save the young child, however, the boy was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The inquiry determined that the father of the victim, Joseph Michael-Wayne Scott, 31, of Seymour, supposedly fell asleep in a recliner while holding the baby. When the man was awakened by a family member, the baby was not breathing, apparently because of the infant’s position in the chair. It was also revealed that Scott allegedly had methamphetamine and marijuana in his system at the time of the incident.
When the investigation concluded, the case was presented to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, which issued the warrant for the suspect on a charge of Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death.
Scott was taken into custody and is incarcerated at the Jackson County Jail pending his initial appearance in the Jackson County Circuit Court.
