NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The Jennings County Jail has reported a recent increase in inmates testing positive for coronavirus. About 30% of the jail population has now tested positive for COVID-19. Three jail officers and one deputy have also contracted the virus and are off duty.
Law enforcement says only a few of the inmates who have the disease are showing symptoms. Those who have tested positive are isolated, as best as the jail allows, and measures are being taken to mitigate more spread.
The Jennings County Health Department visits the jail weekly and is offering the COVID vaccine to those who want it. Jail and medical staff are monitoring the inmates.
Sheriff Kenny Freeman said, “We are very fortunate, up to this point, to have not had a significant rise in numbers in the jail. We are taking every precaution to minimize the further spread and to ensure the safety of the inmates.”
