COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) presented commendations to three department members at Tuesday’s Board of Public Works and Safety meeting.
Fire Chief Andy Lay and Deputy Chief Mark Ziegler recognized the firefighters who rescued an unconscious man found inside an apartment fire at the Williamsburg Apartments on February 2.
The Medal of Valor was presented to Lt. Rick Mullis, and firefighters Derrick Chitwood and Eric Green of CFD’s Engine Co. 4, who were the first on the scene at an early morning basement-level apartment fire.
Witnesses told them that a man had been calling out from inside a smoke-filled apartment. The firefighters breached the locked door and pulled the now unconscious man from the building.
The victim was hospitalized for burns and smoke inhalation. He continues to recover from his injuries.
