GREENWOOD, Ind. — Four people died, including the gunman, after a Sunday shooting at around 6 p.m. at the Greenwood Park Mall. Two others were injured, including a 12-year-old girl.
Greenwood Police Department (GPD) Chief Jim Ison said the shooter, identified as an adult male armed with a long rifle and several magazines of ammunition, was killed by an armed civilian from Bartholomew County who was legally carrying a gun. Chief Ison said the shooter entered the food court and began shooting until a citizen was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he began.
The mass shooting shook the Hoosier community and was the latest in America’s rash of mass shootings recently. A 4th of July parade, schools, grocery stores, churches, and now a mall have all been targeted as sites in the last few months.
At 9:30 p.m. on Sunday the City of Greenwood, Mayor Mark W. Meyers, and the Greenwood Police Department issued a statement saying in part, “As of now, we do not know the shooter’s identity or motive. We do know that someone we are calling the ‘Good Samaritan’ was able to shoot the assailant and stop further bloodshed. This person saved lives. On behalf of the City of Greenwood, we are grateful for his quick action and heroism in this situation.”
