GREENWOOD, Ind. — Greenwood officials provided an update on the Greenwood Park Mall shooting in a press conference Monday afternoon, identifying the shooter and the person Greenwood officials are calling ‘the Good Samaritan’ who stopped the attack quickly after it began.
Jonathan Douglas Sapirman, 20, of Greenwood, was identified as the shooter. Greenwood Police Department (GPD) Chief Jim Ison said the suspect entered the Greenwood Park Mall on Sunday at 4:54 p.m. and went to a bathroom where he stayed for over an hour. He had two rifles, a handgun, and several magazines of ammunition, but he apparently only used one of the rifles.
Among those killed were: Victor Gomez, 30, Pedro Pineda, 56, and his wife, Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, 37.
Sapirman left the bathroom and allegedly shot Gomez, and then fired into the food court, killing the Pinedas. As he fired more shots, GPD says Sapirman injured a 12-year-old girl who was hit with a bullet fragment and a 22-year-old woman who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. Police say he fired 24 rounds.
At 5:57 p.m., Elisjsha Dicken, 22, of Seymour, fired 10 rounds and killed Sapirman. In the press conference, Chief Ison said Dicken had been shopping at the mall with his girlfriend. Police initially referred to Dicken as having been of Bartholomew County, rather than Jackson County.
A search was conducted hours after the shooting at Sapirman’s residence at Polo Run Apartments in Greenwood. During the search, police said they found an oven set to a high temperature with a laptop and a can of butane inside. Chief Ison said they have not determined a motive for the shooting.
