COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Police Department (CPD) arrested two men suspected of an armed robbery that took place in the 900 block of 9th Street early Sunday morning. Officers were dispatched at around 4 a.m.
When they arrived, police were told that during the robbery, a gun was brandished and a victim was robbed of cash before the pair took off in a dark-colored vehicle.
Law enforcement tracked the car and conducted a traffic stop on US 31 near County Road 450N. During the stop, officers say they observed a large sum of money inside the vehicle, per CPD public relations officer Lt. Matt Harris.
Two people inside the car, later identified as Justin D. Allen, 22, of Columbus, and Carter E. Kappel, 21, of Washington, Indiana, were taken into custody. A search of the vehicle allegedly revealed drugs, drug paraphernalia, and a handgun with the serial number removed.
Allen and Kappel were taken to Bartholomew County Jail and each was charged with robbery with a deadly weapon, possession of a handgun with an obliterated serial number, possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon, intimidation with a deadly weapon, pointing a firearm, and possession of a controlled substance.
