COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office has announced they will apply to the Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE) project to become a participating agency.
The ABLE project was created by the Georgetown Law Center. It prepares officers to successfully intervene to prevent harm and to create a law enforcement culture that supports peer intervention with the three main goals being to prevent misconduct, avoid police mistakes, and promote officer health and wellness.
The Bartholomew County Commissioners approved a letter of support for BCSO’s intention on Monday.
“After we get this training we’ll be the only sheriff’s office in the state of Indiana to receive this, or at least the first, so I’m very happy to support this,” said Commissioner Tony London.
BCSO learned about ABLE from Chief Deputy Chris Lane’s participation in the FBI National Academy.
The program’s training and implementation support are provided at no cost to law enforcement agencies, however, they are required to commit to ABLE’s vision.
