COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Columbus City Council approved pay raises for various employees under city jurisdiction at its meeting Tuesday night.
The approval of the raises was the final part of the process for laying out the city’s budget for the 2023 calendar year.
A salary study, commissioned by the City of Columbus, was used as a basis to determine how much the raises would be, based in part on how other city governments compensate for similar positions. Director of Finance Jamie Brinegar said other factors were also considered, including the cost of living.
The council approved:
- a 6% raise for elected officials by a 4-2 vote.
- a 7.9% increase to base pay for sworn firefighters by a 6-0 vote.
- a 7.9% increase to base pay for sworn police by a 6-0 vote.
- a 6% raise for city employees depending on cost-of-living-adjustment and merit reviews from each department by a 6-0 vote.
The city’s budget for 2023 is $89 million, Brinegar said.
