COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Community Education Coalition (CEC) in Columbus has announced that Cummins Inc. will continue its support of the TuFuturo Latino Education and Outreach initiative.
TuFuturo has been a cornerstone of educational support for Latino youth in Bartholomew County for 12 years. The initiative embeds College and Career Readiness coaches within local schools, offering one-on-one coaching, organizing educational events, and collaborating with stakeholders to enhance student educational attainment.
Luz Elena Michel, Director of Latino Education and Outreach, thanked Cummins for its ongoing support and said, “Cummins Inc.’s investment enables us to provide personalized guidance and resources, helping students navigate their educational journeys and achieve their full potential.”
Latino students often face unique challenges, including language barriers, financial constraints, and a lack of understanding within the education system. TuFuturo addresses these issues by offering culturally responsive support, mentorship, and resources designed to meet their specific needs.
The program’s comprehensive approach includes:
- One-on-One Coaching: Personalized guidance to help students with academic planning, college admissions, financial aid, and career exploration
- Informational Workshops: Sessions that provide valuable insights and resources on various aspects of the educational and career pathway
- Mentorship Programs: Connecting students with volunteer mentors from local employers to offer additional support throughout the college application process
- Cultural Events: Celebrations such as Fiesta Latina and Day of the Dead to foster a sense of community and cultural pride among students
Since its inception, TuFuturo has made remarkable strides in improving educational outcomes for Latino students in the community. The CEC program has contributed to a 14% increase in high school graduation rates among Latino students and a 9% increase in college enrollment.
