EDINBURGH, Ind. – Three Indianapolis men led police on a high-speed pursuit that crossed multiple county lines in southern and central Indiana on Friday afternoon.
At around 5:30 p.m., Indiana State Police (ISP) troopers attempted to stop a pickup truck for speeding on southbound I-65. The truck was clocked at 87 mph in a 70 mph zone near the 14-mile marker in Clark County. The vehicle pulled over at the 12-mile marker but the driver quickly sped away with ISP chasing.
The pickup exited at Sellersburg and re-entered the interstate on the northbound side. The pursuit continued through Scott, Jackson, and Bartholomew Counties, often at speeds over 100 mph. Other law enforcement agencies deployed Stop Stick tire deflation devices, however, the driver successfully eluded them on several occasions.
As the truck fled north on I-65, officers allegedly saw the driver and the front-seat passenger throwing an unknown substance out the windows. About five miles south of Columbus, the driver crossed the median and began driving north on the southbound side before getting off at Columbus.
The vehicle exited the interstate and stuck a car entering the southbound on-ramp. The car sustained minor damage and there were no injuries. The pickup then re-entered the interstate on the northbound side and continued fleeing north.
At the 81-mile marker north of Edinburgh, police successfully deployed Stop Sticks, and the truck was disabled near the Johnson/Shelby County line. Three occupants were arrested. Officers learned the truck was reported stolen from Westfield, in May. ISP escorted the suspects to the Clark County Jail.
The driver, James Thomas Vinson, 35, was charged with Resisting Law Enforcement (Level 6 Felony), Vehicle Theft (Level 6 Felony), Habitual Traffic Violator (Level 6 Felony), Criminal Recklessness with a Vehicle (Level 6 Felony), False Informing (Misdemeanor), Possession of Marijuana (Misdemeanor), and several Marion County warrants.
Cedrick Anthony Gleaves, 29, and Carl Fulmore, 23, were booked for Possession of Marijuana (Misdemeanors).
