GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Greenwood Fire Department (GFD) was dispatched to Southbridge Drive in the Cambridge Square Apartments complex on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. after a report of a structure fire. The caller, a visitor to the apartment, advised that the hallway was full of smoke and that they could not reach the occupant.
Within two minutes of receiving the call, Johnson County 911 updated the run to a structure fire with entrapment.
GFD’s Squad 91 arrived on the scene to find a single-story, multi-family dwelling with no signs of fire from two sides of the building. Squad 91 reported that some of the building’s occupants had evacuated.
While searching the building, firefighters found an individual in the apartment where the fire was reported. The subject was transported to Eskenazi Hospital and pronounced dead by hospital staff.
The Greenwood Fire Department, Greenwood Police Department, and Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.
