SOUTHPORT, Ind. – UPDATE (4 p.m.): A 60-year-old semi-truck driver was killed during a fiery crash Thursday morning on southbound I-65 at mile-marker 103 near Southport.
The Indianapolis Fire Department said that at around 10:30 a.m., the semi left the interstate, plowed through the guardrail and roadway signs, and caught fire. Firefighters controlled the blaze in less than an hour.
Traffic was backed up for several miles and I-65 was closed for about five hours.
Authorities say they are trying to determine if the driver suffered a medical emergency before the crash. Indiana State Police is investigating the accident.
Original (12:30 p.m.): Interstate 65 southbound near the Southport Road exit is currently shut down due to a semi-truck that caught fire.
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), the vehicle fire occurred near mile marker 103 on southbound I-65, just past the Southport Road exit.
Indiana State Police have confirmed that one person has died following the accident.
