SOUTH-CENTRAL, Ind. – An area of arctic high pressure means bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills early in the week. An Extreme Cold Watch has been issued and will begin late Sunday night for Bartholomew, Johnson, Shelby, Jackson, Jennings, Decatur, and Brown Counties. It will continue on Monday and early Tuesday.
The National Weather Service in Indianapolis says this system will bring the coldest air of the season, so far, to the region. The overnight low on Monday and Tuesday mornings will be below zero in many locations.
The Extremely Cold Watch is in effect because the bitterly cold temperatures combined with the wind will plummet wind chill values to -10 to -20 degrees, with some isolated areas falling to near -25.
Wind chills this low could lead to hypothermia or frostbite, so officials recommend these precautions:
- If you go outdoors, limit your time, dress in layers, and cover all exposed skin
- If you work outside, take frequent breaks in a warm, heated area
- When driving, slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination
- Ensure your car is full of gasoline/fuel
- Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle
- Bring your pets inside
- Keep generators at least 20 feet from your home
