COLUMBUS, Ind. – Water Plant #2 at Columbus City Utilities (CCU) near the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds on Spears Street, announced late Monday morning that it was experiencing a valve failure, resulting in a slight chlorine leak. There was no danger to the community.
The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) Hazardous Response Team went to the plant and began monitoring the situation along with CCU, concurrent with the water utility’s Emergency Response Plan.
For a brief period, residents were recommended to stay clear of the area until CCU and CFD addressed the issue.
At 11:30 a.m., CFD and CCU gave the “all-clear” at Water Plant #2. The chlorine gas leak was contained, and the leaking valve was repaired.
